THE PROJECT

Outline Design Office was initially engaged to provide Workplace Strategy for this evolving organisation to help create a work model that supported it’s growth, changing culture and ownership structure.  Once a commitment was made to relocate to Jubilee Place, this provided the perfect opportunity for Watpac to showcase their Master Builder capabilities, not only in the construction of the Base Building and surrounding precinct but also their own fitout.  Outline Design Office worked with Watpac and then BESIX Watpac to translate the workplace strategy into a workplace offering that celebrated the unique building and accommodated both the head office and state based construction arm within one collective space.   

Linkages between floors, connection to views and base building architectural elements were explored throughout the design process with various options tested as client requirements changed.  Rendered 3D views and Fly-throughs were used to test different design approaches and communicate key linkages across floors.  The project, comprised of two contiguous floors, included a diverse range of workspaces, meeting rooms and specialist bid and project spaces.   A large, centrally located breakout space was designed to bring staff together from across floors and diverse teams, fostering collaboration and a united team culture.  The unique base building design which included a fully exposed slab, structural steel beams and angled columns provided the perfect canvas for a creative solution based on the insertion of enclosed rooms as stand-alone elements within the building envelope.   

Following completion of Design Development Documentation the works where handed over to the BESIX Watpac’s internal design and delivery team.   The warm palette utilising walnut timber and textured paint finishes provides a robust and timeless foundation within which the organisation can host industry partners and connect with one another.  The flexibility of the work area will support future changes to this dynamic organisation, including possible additional service offerings and workstreams.
